Music is an extremely personal thing to some people. I have friends who feel uncomfortable when asked what type of music they listen to. Certain songs can have lyrics that are deeply personal and relatable to us, so it’s no wonder we feel exposed when people view our playlist or hear what music we’re listening to.
This is also why music can have such a profound effect on how we feel. For instance, the music playing in your yoga class could make you feel all kinds of things – happiness, sadness, or perhaps determination. Your personal experiences and associations to a particular song is instantly going to spark those feelings in you. But that’s what yoga is all about – tuning into how you feel today, right now, in this moment.
I’ll never forget the yoga class I took with Rachel Brathen (aka Yoga Girl) and the music she played during that class. It was as if it was fine tuned to me. During Savasana the song Holocene by Bon Iver played and the moment couldn’t have been more perfect. That song has always been a favorite of mine, but since that class the song has a much deeper and highly personal meaning to me.
For your own home yoga practice, I’ve put together a list of music suitable to melt into your poses and soothe you. Here’s 20 songs for your ultimate yoga playlist.
